An Exploration of the Future of Online Education in Premier Universities
The word college conjures up an image of going away to a 4-year brick and mortar university to live, learn and earn an undergraduate degree. Within the United States, however, this is no longer always the case. Both online courses and online degree programs are currently offered at colleges nationwide. Some institutions such as community colleges have already incorporated these programs into their curriculum at high rates. Premier universities, on the other hand, have been more hesitant to adopt online courses. Through secondary research, this paper analyzes indicators and uncertainties associated with top universities’ adoption of online courses from the perspective of students, university personnel, and employers. Upon summarizing these factors, this report suggests business implications from its findings and provides suggestions to businesses on how they can prepare for the uncertain future of the online course industry.
